Vision Boards: a creative tool to visualise your dreams

I’ve been creating vision boards every year for well over a decade. It's been the perfect creative tool for me to visualise my dreams so they can come alive. And boy, do they!

It’s around this time of year that I start thinking about my vision board for the new year ahead and reflect on the year that’s been. I start collecting words, images, quotes, or any other thing I find that resonates with me in the moment. I flip through magazines, catalogs, books, get out my stash of glue, glitter, coloured pens, and paints and put on some good music to see me through the next 3-4 hours of creativity time.

My vision board for 2016 was created in April, 2016. It was a trifle late in the making, but I finally got it finished because I really needed to get clear on how I wanted the next year of my life to blossom.

2016 vision board

2016 vision board

This vision board is called "Welcome to your next adventure" and it's about:

-  health and wellbeing (primarily stemming from a 10 month discourse with sciatica)
-  growing and feasting on knowledge and sharing it with others
-  receiving my yoga teacher certification
-  reflecting and taking massive action to live my life’s purpose
-  creating more balance in my life for my health, my happiness and my soul

The flowers and the bees represent nature, growth, abundance and life. The heart of vegetables represent health and wellbeing and making that a core part of my life. It's colourful and vibrant, which is how I live my life. It pays tribute to a year I lost a colleague and friend, and it gave me time to reflect on my life and my losses and how they remain part of me:

What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes part of us.
— Helen Keller

I've made a reference to yoga for the last few vision boards, but this year is special for me, as I celebrate becoming an Anusara inspired yoga teacher. My 2016 vision board is dominated by yoga. It's about looking inwards to help myself outwards. I see myself moving into a different chapter in life; I'm a mama, which means I'm also a teacher. So it's time for me to start teaching all that I know.

I'm finally coming into my own as a woman, as a mama, as a yogini, as a creative entrepreneur and asking myself what my life looks like if I balance them all? Now that I'm gaining clarity around my purpose, my mindset and my mantra suddenly shift to this:

If it doesn’t align with my vision, then say no!

In gathering images for this post, I went back a few years to reflect on my previous vision board incarnations and I noticed that the same themes come up again and again; yoga, nature, healthy living and creativity. It was no surprise to me. But you will see a distinct shift in a more muted colour palette from last year.

2015 vision board

2015 vision board

My 2015 vision board was about finding inspiration all around me, especially patterns in the home and in nature. I needed to learn to treat myself with more love and kindness. It’s also about finding ways to live my life more fully and love more openly. There’s two small fishes that represent myself and my partner - both Pisces. (It’s present in my 2016 board, too!) It’s about becoming a rock star human being and living a life of presence, kindness and peace.

Note: after creating this vision board, the exact squirrel dress showed up in a catalog that appeared in my post. I now own this dress.

2014 vision board

In my 2014 vision board, yoga again dominates the stage. There are heavy floral and green tones as well as a nod to bringing the outside in... both in nature and in my soul. And allowing myself to be more playful means my spirit will flow with more ease. There's also alot of power in this vision board, as the woman is punching off the page and the yogini's powerful dancer pose is pushing off the page, too.  This was about pushing through any limitations I have about myself.

2013 vision board

2013 vision board

My 2013 vision board is covered with words, yoga and nature. It started to question what I believed and who I was at the time, with a bold directive to dare to be yourself. The beatnik playing bongos is a nod to my past life as creator and designer of Beatnik Bags which, although now closed, still plays an ongoing role in my life.

My intention is to inspire you to create your own vision board, as 2017 is drawing near. When you get clear on your vision and have fun in the process, you allow the universe to expand and explode to give you all that you need. You allow that energy to flow directly to you.

If you liked this post, then please share it with others. And if you've created your own vision boards, then I'd love to see them!
